Can I claim compensation for a delayed flight?
You may qualify when UK261 applies and you reached your final destination more than three hours late, unless extraordinary circumstances caused the delay. Eligibility depends on the route, operating airline, delay at arrival and cause.
Compensation bands
The Civil Aviation Authority currently lists fixed compensation of £220 for qualifying flights under 1,500km and £350 for qualifying flights between 1,500km and 3,500km. For flights over 3,500km, the amount can be £260 or £520 depending on the arrival delay.
Evidence to collect
- Booking confirmation, flight number and operating airline.
- Scheduled and actual arrival times.
- Boarding passes and disruption messages.
- The airline’s explanation for the delay.
- Itemised receipts for reasonable care expenses.
Delay compensation and expenses differ
Compensation is a fixed statutory amount when the conditions are met. Food, accommodation and transport expenses concern the airline’s duty of care. A ticket refund is another separate remedy and may apply when a delay exceeds five hours and you choose not to travel.
How to escalate
Claim from the airline first. If its final response is unsatisfactory, or it has not responded within the applicable period, the CAA explains when an approved alternative dispute resolution provider or its Passenger Advice and Complaints Team may help.
